The McCarthy & Stone Pet Policy? Pets are welcome!

Pets are an important part of family life, which is why we welcome well-behaved pets in most of our retirement living developments. We also carefully balance the needs of pet owners with those of residents who prefer a pet-free environment, helping to create a comfortable community for everyone.

Homeowners may keep common domestic household pets within their property, subject to written permission under the terms of their lease. Cats must be indoor-only domestic house cats, and outdoor or free-roaming cats are not permitted. While we aim to approve most requests, some animals may not be suitable for retirement communities, such as venomous reptiles and other pets that could pose a risk to residents.

Pet owners are responsible for their animal’s care, welfare, and behaviour at all times. Pets must not cause damage to communal areas or private property, create excessive noise, or cause nuisance, injury, or disturbance to other residents or visitors. Failure to comply with these conditions may result in permission being withdrawn.

If you would like more information about our pet policy in retirement properties or have questions about bringing a pet into one of our developments, please contact our friendly team, who will be happy to help.

The benefits of having a pet

Pets are great companions for homeowners and there’s evidence to show that pet ownership makes you healthier and happier too.

Stress relief
Research has shown that petting a dog decreases the stress hormone cortisol and helps decrease blood pressure and overall helps you feel less stressed.

Maintain a routine
Caring for a pet provides structure to the day – whether that’s feeding, walking or grooming.

Be social
Pets can also lead to more human connections. Often a great talking point and pets create an opportunity to interact with others. Animals also help you feel less alone or isolated when you’re at home.

Mobility
Physical exercise is key to a healthy lifestyle. Having a pet that requires walking can be extremely beneficial to retaining good health later in life.
